Homegrown Dance

In it’s original form.

In Situ Dance Theatre Company debuts its first public performance of all original  New Zealand works at Baycourt this May.

‘Homegrown’ mixes contemporary dance with live music, an exciting an innovative combination that is rarely seen.

Catherine Brown, founder and director of The Dance House, formed In Situ  (in si too meaning ‘in its original form’) a year ago and its twelve members are between 9 and 15 years of age. In Situ has been set up as a training ground for aspiring young contemporary dancers.

The trained dancers have been selected because of their outstanding abilities in this genre, all bringing an individual strength to the work. Catherine Brown says; “Working with these dancers has inspired me throughout the process. They way that each dancer has responded to the choreography shows an intuitive ability to convey both an innocence and wisdom through their bodies. Contemporary dance crosses all boundaries of culture and experiences. Movement is unpretentious and honest, speaking directly to the audience’s emotional intelligence.

The choreography in Homegrown is based on the unique history of our home, land, and sea  .The first work both powerful and captivating, explores Maori bird hunting traditions, while the second is a fun interpretation of children’s games set in the 1950’s .

The dancers are accompanied by all original New Zealand composers and song writers including Hirini Melbourne and Richard Nunns, Salmonella Dub, and Trillion.

A real high point of the performance in the second half sees the collaboration of In Situ and live bands Terra Firma, led by Pete Newitt, and drumming sensations Fote Khan.

Add to this multi media by photographer Moana Bianchin and lighting design by Craig Jamieson, a veteran of  lighting design of new Zealand stage and theatre, to create the magic of a truly ‘Homegrown’ performance, adding a new flavour to New Zealand Music Month.
